Choosing Your Bathroom Fixtures
There’s an expression that the best things come in the smallest packages and that can often be true. In the design world it’s seen again and again. Small things make a big impact, tiny touches can renovate a design and complement the bigger picture. In the bathroom, where anything small can have dramatic results, this is especially true. We spend time and money renovating our bathrooms - choosing the big items that really determine the style of the room - the bath vanities, the sinks, the shower, floors, wall color, etc. Yet, it’s when you add the finishing touches that the room really and truly comes together. Bathroom fixtures are the finishing touches to any bathroom - the final sweep that brings a design together in reality rather than just in your mind’s eye. Here are some of the more well-known bathroom fixtures and how your choice can impact the overall style of your bathroom.
Faucets - In the world of fixtures, these are the bigger items as they stand front and center in the room and pair with your sink and bathroom vanity. Don’t underestimate how much impact faucets can have on your design. In other words, if you’re going for a contemporary look and have chosen a modern vanity and glass countertops, then follow through with contemporary faucets for you sink, bathtub and shower - and vice versa if you’ve chosen a more traditional bathroom design. For instance, a bright polished chrome faucet is likely to look out of a place with a vintage vanity. Keep the bigger picture in mind.
Showerheads - Nothing screams luxury like a beautiful showerhead. Consider it the icing on the remodeling cake. A great showerhead can give provide you with a peaceful respite and will add drama and value to the room.
Bath Hardware - Small touches don’t get much smaller than bath hardware but they have big power. Choose every piece - from towel bars/hooks to toilet tissue holders - with your decorative vision in mind.
Mirrors and Medicine Cabinets - Again, these pieces can top off a design or topple it over completely. Choose mirrors that are in scale with your bathroom vanities and sinks and that fit the style of the room (charming mirrors with antique finishes for vintage rooms, sleek lines for contemporary rooms, etc.). The same goes for medicine cabinets although it’s also important to ensure that any cabinet that you choose provides you with adequate space for storage.
Details, Details - Finish the room with small touches such as the addition of storage cabinets - either freestanding or wall-mounted - that complement your design and colors, towels, shower curtains and other decorative pieces.
